With the advancements of modern sciences , these days we have choices of different materials to restore our teeth.
Dental amalgams have been used world-wide for a long time. Although not the most aesthetic material, it is still commonly used for tooth fillings owing to it's strength and longevity. However modern dentistry now offers more aesthetic materials with improved properties.
Composite resins have mainly been used on the front teeth, where a silver filling would be noticeable. Thanks to advances in modern dental materials and techniques, teeth can now be restored with more aesthetic and natural appearing filling materials. Increasingly, these fillings are now also being used on the back teeth. The materials come in a variety of shades so that they will match the color of your own teeth.
Ceramic inlay and onlay restorations have excellent aesthetics and longevity, and are a good treatment option for large cavities. With greater strength than composite resin restorations, they are suitable for posterior teeth which take higher forces in mastication. With the advent of CAD/CAM and 3D printing technology, ceramic inlay and onlay restorations can now be fabricated and cemented on the same day.
